Pentecost is a key feast in the Christian liturgical calendar, celebrated 50 days after Easter Sunday (hence the name “Pentecost,” derived from the Greek pentēkostē, meaning “fiftieth”). It marks the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and the early followers of Jesus, as described in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 2). Pentecost is often referred to as the “birthday of the Church” because it was on this day that the apostles were empowered to begin their mission of spreading the Gospel to the world.

For the Knights of Columbus, Pentecost serves as a time to reflect on the role of the Holy Spirit in the mission of the Church, especially in the lives of Catholic men committed to faith, charity, unity, and fraternity. Pentecost reminds us of the empowerment that comes from the Holy Spirit, who guides us in our service to others and strengthens our resolve to live out the Gospel in our communities.

Many councils may take this opportunity to reflect on their work and renew their commitment to the mission of the Church, praying for the gifts of the Holy Spirit to guide their efforts. It’s also a good time for prayer and fellowship, whether through a special Pentecost Mass, prayer service, or an outreach project.

Will your council be holding any special events or activities for Pentecost, such as prayer services or community outreach?
