Spy Wednesday
April 1
Spy Wednesday is observed on the Wednesday of Holy Week, the day before Maundy Thursday. It’s called “Spy Wednesday” because of the events in the Gospel, specifically the moment when Judas Iscariot conspired with the religious leaders to betray Jesus. In some traditions, the “spy” refers to Judas being a “spy” among the apostles, ultimately plotting against Christ in exchange for thirty pieces of silver.
Spy Wednesday can be a time for private reflection or prayer, perhaps focusing on themes of repentance, humility, and the need for God’s grace in the face of our own failings.
Do you or your council do anything particular on Spy Wednesday, like a special Mass, prayer, or reflection?
